The Super Mario Bros movie is in theatres. So let’s mix nostalgia and fun with AI. Recently an Nvidia AI researcher, Jim Fan, got access to Adobe Firefly - an AI suite built by Adobe. He generated images with a detailed text description (or prompt as it is called) and compared it with Midjourney (which is the current state of the art).

Prompt given: A photograph capturing Super Mario in a pose in a dim lit street and a big reflection in a puddle on the ground, there is a slight haze in the air, and you know something is about to happen, there is anticipation. It’s like a scene from a Hollywood movie, high production value, anthropomorphic lens glare.

The incumbent Midjourney has beaten the giant Adobe hands-down in image generation. That is the potential of AI, where with an excellent product, an incumbent can beat a giant and give them a run on the money.

But this is still too early to say - Image generation is just one part of the toolkit for Adobe Firefly.

Other things Firefly can do:

• Replace subjects: You can identify an object in an image and replace it with anything else.
• Video editing: You can edit your videos like a pro without spending too much time learning video editing. Text-to-video editing capabilities are in the pipeline.
• 3D Modelling: Firefly can add new styles and variations of objects in 3D videos.

🤔 Why are Adobe images so bad?

Why are Adobe Firefly images so bad? Reason: It is trained only on Adobe stock and open license images, while Midjourney is trained on all images (irrespective of copyright). This is good news for companies who don’t want any copyright issues with the images.

Where does the copyright lie when you train on copyright images? A very tricky area where policymakers will have to struggle (or ask AI to propose a solution 🙂).
